Great answer. Sometimes it’s hard to move pass the fear of failure or what people will say but change is good. We all deserve the chance to follow our dreams. We just need to try.

Hi Susan! Excellent post! The fear of failure and the fear of what others may think of us are huge reasons why most of us are afraid of taking risks. So playing it safe contains the damage. But, it prevents change and keeps us from moving forward. I think it’s awesome that you are following your dream!

You have a good point. I still work full-time because it’s too risky to me to quit at this point. Yet I still get to write which is my dream.

You are right. If I didn’t follow my heart, I wouldn’t be a published writer. Sometimes reality is better than dreaming.

I tend to play it safer now that I’m older but I did take the leap to be a writer. Now I wish I would have done it sooner.

Aren’t there hybrids between the two–playing it safe and taking risks? I feel like I’m there now…going out on a limb to be a writer, but there are other things I could do (like quit my paying job) that would be even riskier. I think we have to avoid weighting these choices with too much moral meaning…i.e., one is not necessarily better, right?

I have taken risks at times when I should have been very risk adverse and didn’t take risks when most would have. *shrug* Now I’m old enough, experienced enough to know what it is I truly value. Taking a risk for my loved ones or toward my dreams are things I’m very willing to do now. To me the risk of NOT following your heart is the bigger risk.
